Description

MOHAN SINGH

Mohan Singh born 1972, Delhi is a prominent contemporary Indian artist and academic whose practice bridges figurative and abstract expression. Based in Delhi, he earned his BFA (1994) and MFA (1996) from the College of Art, Delhi, where he currently serves as a Professor, actively contributing to art education and mentorship.

Singh’s paintings reflect a deep engagement with form, texture, and human sensibility, combining classical discipline with contemporary philosophical inquiry. Influenced by Gaston Bachelard’s Water and Dreams, he uses water as a central metaphor for reflection, imagination, and the illusory nature of the modern world. His recurring imagery of wide-eyed youth addresses alienation, desire, materialism, urbanisation, and globalisation, articulating the dilemmas of Generation X while questioning the erosion of traditional values.

Since his first solo exhibition in 2000, Singh has held more than 11 solo exhibitions across India, Japan, and Germany. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Watari-Um Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, where he received the South Asian Friendship Scholarship, and is held in significant institutional and private collections.
