ABID SHAIKH
Abid Usmangani Shaikh is a contemporary Indian artist known for his deeply reflective and intuitive style. Born on October 8, 1977, in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, Abid graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 2002. His artistic journey is a testament to his ability to blend traditional academic training with a profound personal expression that speaks to contemporary themes of identity, resilience, and cultural memory.
Over the years, Abid has presented a compelling body of work through a series of acclaimed solo exhibitions. His debut solo show, ‘Astitva’ at Jehangir Art Gallery in 2003, set the tone for a career filled with poignant and visually striking exhibitions. He has showcased his work at leading art spaces such as Museum Art Gallery, BCA Art Gallery, and Sumukha Art Galleries in Chennai and Bangalore. Notable exhibitions include ‘Local Spine’ (2009), ‘Soft Land’ (2011), ‘Equals’ (2015), and his most recent show ‘Unity’ at Jehangir Art Gallery in 2023. His presence has also extended to prominent platforms like the Global Art Fair and the India Art Festival.
Abid has been an active participant in group shows across India and internationally. His works have been featured at the Singapore Art Fair, Harmony Art Shows in Mumbai and Dubai, and exhibitions at Birla Art Gallery in Kolkata and Sumukha Art Gallery in Chennai. His consistent participation in curated shows and art fairs reflects the wide appeal and enduring relevance of his art practice.
Throughout his career, Abid has received numerous awards and accolades. He was honored with the Harmony Excellence Award in 2006 as an emerging artist in the painting category. He also won the first prize from the Camel Art Foundation in the oil colour medium and was the Euro Art Tour Winner of the CAF Art Contest in 2017. His early talent was recognized with the Maharashtra State Award for Best Portrait in 2000, the Art Society of India’s Best Painting Award in 2004, and the V.V. Pendse Award in 1996. He is also a multiple-time recipient of the Sir J.J. School of Art’s annual awards.
