Description

GURCHARAN SINGH

Born in 1949 in Patiala, Punjab, Gurcharan Singh is a senior Indian artist known for his powerful and emotive figurative paintings. He began his artistic journey at the Government College of Arts & Crafts, Chandigarh, in 1973, and over the decades has developed a deeply personal visual language rooted in social reality.

Singh’s work portrays the everyday lives of India’s underprivileged and marginalized communities, featuring men, women, children, musicians, and animals that embody struggle, resilience, and quiet dignity. Drawing from memories of his childhood, his paintings carry strong autobiographical and emotional depth. As he notes, “These are all things that I remember from my childhood, which I relate to even now.” Scenes such as village musicians surrounded by onlookers evoke nostalgia while offering subtle social commentary.

Recognized for his vibrant palette and often large-scale compositions, Singh has exhibited widely in India and abroad. He has held solo exhibitions in New Delhi, Mumbai, Paris, London, and Seoul, and has participated in major international events including the International Biennale, Tokyo (1984), the Contemporary Art Show, Seoul (1986), and the Festival of Contemporary Art, London (1988). Through his art, Gurcharan Singh continues to give voice to the voiceless, exploring themes of memory, identity, and the human condition.
