SUBRATA PAUL
Subrata Paul was born in 1972 and has been professionally active as a sculptor since 1998. Trained with a DVA in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata (1998), he is known for exploring the hidden territories of form and meaning, creating works that go beyond the apparent visual world. His sculptures evolve through transformation, breaking away from imitation to generate new aesthetic and spiritual sensibilities.
Working with materials such as bronze and wood, Paul blends tradition with modernity in themes inspired by human life, animals, gods, and nature. His art expresses emotions of joy and sorrow, intimacy and ecstasy through symbolic, expressive forms rather than literal realism. He is a member of Calcutta Sculptors, one of India’s important sculptural collectives.
Subrata Paul has received several major honours, including the All India Best Sculpture Award from the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata (2006) and AIFACS, New Delhi (2019), along with multiple state and institutional merits. With over 150 group exhibitions and four solo shows, he has exhibited widely across India and internationally, including Dubai. His works are held in notable collections such as Birla Academy, the Ministry of Defence (Kolkata), Hotel Lalit (New Delhi), and private collections across India, Europe, and the USA.
