SUBRATA GANGOPADHYAY
Born in 1959 in Calcutta (Kolkata), India, Subrata Gangopadhyay is an acclaimed Indian artist and a leading figure in the modern realistic painting tradition. He graduated with a First-Class First Diploma in Paintings (1980) from the Government College of Art & Crafts, Calcutta, specializing in Life-Nature and Murals. His work is distinguished by exceptional draughtsmanship, strong linear structure, and finely observed figurative detail.
He is best known for his celebrated “Rhythmic Harmony Series,” where dancers in vibrant oils and acrylics appear in dynamic motion, their swirling costumes capturing rhythm, grace, and movement. This iconic series has become a defining hallmark of his artistic identity.
A versatile artist, Gangopadhyay is equally accomplished in portraiture, moving effortlessly between smooth academic realism and expressive, bold interpretations. His strong technical foundation blends seamlessly with a contemporary sensibility, resulting in works that are both emotionally engaging and visually powerful.
He previously served as Assistant Art Director at the Ananda Bazar Group of Publications and is now a full-time independent artist. His works are part of prestigious institutional and corporate collections, including RPG Enterprises, the Taj Group, the Chennai Museum, Mayo College, and the Victoria Memorial, as well as private collections in the USA, Germany, the UK, France, Singapore, and Dubai. He has exhibited widely in India and internationally, securing his place among India’s most respected modern artists.
