MONA DALAL
Mona Dalal is a contemporary Indian visual artist based in Surat, whose practice balances narrative figuration with a subtle drift toward abstraction. Both self-taught and formally trained, she is known for her motivated, courageous, and experimental approach, continually refining her visual language through dedication and hard work.
Primarily a narrative painter, Mona draws inspiration from everyday moments, human interactions, and still life, translating small, often overlooked events of life onto canvas. A hazy sense of abstraction frequently weaves through her figurative works, adding emotional depth and painterly intrigue. Alongside this, she has developed a strong body of purely abstract works, demonstrating versatility across styles and concepts. Influenced early on by artists such as Amrita Sher-Gil and Bhupen Khakhar, her art reflects sensitivity, observation, and a contemporary sensibility.
With over 15 years of professional experience, Mona is also an art educator who teaches drawing and painting from foundational principles, enabling students to grow into confident creative artists. She works across multiple media including pencil, charcoal, colour pastels, acrylics, and oils. She has participated in 8–10 group exhibitions and held 3 solo shows to date. Living and working in Surat, Mona Dalal continues to evolve her practice with the aspiration to exhibit more widely and establish a strong presence in the global contemporary art scene.
