MADHUSUDAN KUMAR

Born on 16 September 1944 in Mangalore, Karnataka, Madhusudan Kumar is a distinguished Indian artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, music, cinema, and literature. He is a Member of the Managing Committee and former Honorary Secretary (1999–2021) of the historic Artists’ Centre, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai—an institution closely associated with the Progressive Artists’ Group and the Bombay Group.

As a visual artist, he is internationally acclaimed for his celebrated painting series “Naad Brahma – Music of the Cosmos,” noted for its emotional depth, free-flowing colour, and musical sensibility. Art critics including Dnyaneshwar Nadkarni, R. T. Shahani, and Rinki Bhattacharya have described these works as “Poetry in Motion.” His paintings are housed in prestigious collections in India and abroad. He became a professional portrait artist at the age of 14, and after migrating to Bombay, won the Bombay Art Society’s Bhulabhai Memorial Prize for his painting “Jugalbandi” at the Jehangir Art Gallery Platinum Jubilee Exhibition (1966).

Madhusudan Kumar is also an accomplished sitar performer, a direct disciple of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan, and has presented sitar solos at major cultural venues across India. His contribution to cinema includes the acclaimed woman-centric feature film “Kadambari,” based on a novel by Amrita Pritam, and the important documentary “In the Eyes of Picasso – Kala Ghoda” (2002), valued for its archival and cultural significance.

A prolific writer and scriptwriter in English, Hindi, Kannada, and Tulu, he has authored film scripts, plays, and literary works rooted in history, folklore, music, and social themes. He is also the founder of the Madhusudan Education Foundation, dedicated to nurturing and promoting visual and performing arts, education, and cultural development in India.
