Description
AVIJIT ROY
Avijit Roy is a contemporary Indian artist known for his powerful, high-energy visual language that explores strength, resilience, spirituality, and human emotion. Born in West Bengal in 1962, Roy’s practice is rooted in a deep engagement with raw physical and emotional energy, often expressed through bold forms and dynamic compositions.
He is widely recognised for his iconic black bull motif—symbolising raw power, endurance, and inner force—as well as works inspired by Buddha that reflect calm, introspection, and spiritual balance. Another significant body of work, his knife series, conveys empathy and human vulnerability through stark, symbolic imagery. Roy works extensively with charcoal, graphic prints, and the Chine Collé technique, using rice paper and layered textures to heighten visual intensity. His style moves fluidly between figuration and abstraction, marked by rhythmic lines, tension, and expressive movement.
Roy studied at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (V.A.F.A.), and later completed a Post Diploma in Graphic Design from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He has held solo exhibitions in India, the UK, Germany, and Australia, and has conducted workshops in India and the UK. Strongly committed to making art accessible, he uses graphic art as a democratic medium to reach wider audiences and has remained actively engaged with contemporary art discourse, particularly within the Delhi art scene.
