Description

BHIVA PUNEKAR

Bhiva Punekar is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice is deeply spiritual in essence, though not religious in narrative. His paintings move beyond mythology and storytelling to engage with universal human experience, inner consciousness, and cosmic energy. Rather than illustrating belief systems, Punekar’s work seeks to evoke meditation, introspection, and transcendence through form, colour, and symbol.

Trained at leading art institutions, he completed his A.T.D. (1988) and G.D. Art (1991) from Kalavishwa Mahavidyalaya, Sangli, followed by a Diploma in Art Education from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai (1992). Working across oils, acrylics, charcoal, ink, pencil, and mixed media on paper and canvas, his practice has undergone significant refinement over the past decade and a half, reflecting both technical maturity and conceptual depth. He demonstrates a nuanced understanding of visual language, particularly the subtle use of tantric symbols as pictorial devices.

In his recent works, the Lingam emerges as a central pictorial form—not as a religious icon, but as a powerful metaphor for creative energy and cosmic balance. Referencing the ancient Indian tradition dating back to the Indus Valley civilisation, Punekar explores the Lingam as a symbol of regeneration and the meeting point of Kundalini Shakti and Shiva at the Brahma-randhra. Often positioned on the forehead or aligned with the Sahasrara Chakra, these forms are rendered in mystic, luminous colours. A striking hallmark of his work is the human face illuminated from within, radiating an inner glow that symbolises the dialogue between the cosmos and the self. Through shape, symbol, and colour, Punekar’s art transmits a meditative energy—one that seeks to penetrate the viewer’s mind and soul, completing a silent yet powerful circle of communication.
