SANJIV SANKKPAL
Sanjiv Sankkpal is a contemporary Indian figurative artist and sculptor whose work explores the human form as a powerful metaphor for emotion, nature, and lived experience. Hailing from rural Maharashtra, his practice is deeply rooted in Indian cultural sensibilities while engaging with modern and classical art traditions. His early works drew from rural life, Krishna–Radha narratives, and old Indian and Goan architectural elements, rendered in rich earthy tones with vibrant colour accents.
Sankkpal is academically trained in both painting and sculpture, holding an MFA from Hubli, a Diploma in Art Education from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, a G.D. Art in Drawing & Painting from Dalvi’s Art Institute, Kolhapur, and a G.D. Art in Sculpture from Kala Mandir Mahavidyalaya, Kolhapur. A pivotal experience in 2009, working with a live nude model in Kelowna, Canada, marked a shift in his practice, placing the unclothed human body at the centre of his work—not as nudity, but as a language of honesty, vulnerability, strength, and liberation.
Influenced by travels across the UK, Europe, and South Korea, and inspired by masters such as Henry Moore, Rodin, Matisse, and Van Gogh, his works balance classical aesthetics with contemporary expression. The emotional solitude of the 2020 pandemic further intensified his focus on the human condition, resulting in introspective works that speak of pain, resilience, and hope. Characterised by contrapposto poses, textured surfaces, blurred effects, and references to chiaroscuro and sfumato, Sankkpal’s paintings and sculptures offer silent yet evocative narratives—inviting viewers to connect with the universal emotions embedded within the human form.
