SHYAMAL MUKHERJEE
Shyamal Mukherjee was born in 1963 in Kolkata and is a leading Bengali contemporary artist celebrated for his joyful, instantly engaging visual language. He received his formal art training at Santiniketan, completing his BFA in 1987 and MFA in 1989 from Rabindra Bharati University, which laid the foundation for his distinctive and technically accomplished practice.
Mukherjee is best known for his highly demanding reverse oil and acrylic paintings on transparent sheets—a meticulous process that reflects both technical mastery and patience. Drawing inspiration from everyday life, his figures often verge on caricature, animated with warmth, humour, and gentle satire. Guided by his belief that art should spread happiness, his works are designed to evoke smiles and emotional connection rather than solemnity.
Rooted in Bengali folk culture, Mukherjee’s iconic Baba and Beebi imagery has become central to his artistic identity. He has held over 36 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows in India and internationally, with extensive exposure across Dubai, Sri Lanka, Bangkok, Russia, Europe, and Bhutan. His works are part of prominent private collections, including those of Manoj Kumar, the late Sunil Dutt, and Varun Gandhi. Alongside his studio practice, Mukherjee also shares his experience through international art workshops, continuing to spread joy through both teaching and art.
