SEEMA KOHLI
Seema Kohli is a renowned Indian contemporary artist, sculptor, and poet based in New Delhi. Born in 1960 in Delhi, she studied at Miranda House, University of Delhi, and the College of Art, New Delhi. Deeply rooted in Indian metaphysical thought, her practice draws from ancient texts, mythology, spiritual symbolism, and the feminine principle, articulated through a distinctly contemporary and multidisciplinary visual language.
Working across painting, mixed media, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, and artist books, Kohli’s art is marked by intricate detailing, luminous surfaces, gold leaf, calligraphic gestures, and sacred motifs. Her works explore themes of creation, desire, transcendence, cosmic energy, and inner consciousness. Spanning over five decades of experimentation, her notable projects include the award-winning film Swayamsiddha – Myth, Mind, and Movement (Gold Medal, Florence Biennale 2009), large-scale installations such as her cutting-chai glass work at Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (2016), the artist book A Storm in My Teacup (now in the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art collection), and exhibitions including Cut From the Same Cloth at Bikaner House, New Delhi (2023).
Seema Kohli has exhibited at major international platforms including the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Florence Biennale, Venice Biennale of Art, Art Basel, ARCO, India Art Fair, Jaipur Literature Festival, and the National Gallery of Modern Art. Her works are held in leading museum and institutional collections worldwide, such as the British Museum (UK), Rubin Museum (USA), Phoenix Museum of Art, Museum of Art and Photography, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Bihar Museum, Bharat Bhavan, Lalit Kala Akademi, and the Birth Rites Collection (UK). Widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Indian art, Kohli continues to create immersive works that connect ancient wisdom with contemporary experience.
