Subrata Das is a Kolkata-born contemporary artist who works primarily with acrylic and mixed media, creating paintings imbued with mysticism, romance, and poetic serenity. His visual world is populated with surreal flowers and twines, peacocks and birds, blue lotuses, and the omnipresent flute—elements that lend his compositions a dreamlike, meditative atmosphere. Rich colour and symbolic imagery are central to his practice, resulting in works that feel both lyrical and timeless.
A recurring theme in Das’s oeuvre is the mystical love of Radha and Krishna, where the rasas of bhakti (devotion) and shringara (romantic love) merge seamlessly. Moving away from ornate divine iconography, he portrays Radha and Krishna as young lovers in simple village attire—intimate, restrained, and emotionally immersed. Alongside them, figures such as Krishna and the Buddha reappear in his work, reflecting the artist’s deep engagement with the sublime and contemplative aspects of ancient Indian myths and legends.
Das’s paintings are recognized for their serene, graceful aura, often rendered in aqua and blue-green tones and set within lush, forest-like landscapes.
